Completely redesigned

It was to be expected that Fiat's first electric car would be an offshoot of the successful 500. But all those who believed that the Italians would simply plant a battery in the underbody of their bestseller are proven wrong by Fiat. The Fiat 500e has been completely redeveloped, stands on its own platform and has only the cuddly look in common with its petrol-powered predecessors.

A bit inflated

Visually, the small electric car looks rounder and even more spherical. As if the old 500 had simply been inflated a bit. And indeed, the socket smooch ball has also grown. However, with a length of 3.63 meters (plus 6.1 cm), a width of 1.68 meters (plus 5.6 cm) and a height of 1.53 meters (plus 2.9 cm), the 500e still remains an ideal city car in the small car segment, in which other electric competitors are already cavorting.

Up to 320 km range

What makes the electric Fiat 500 a hit in the segment: It offers the most powerful battery - and thus the best range. Fiat has installed a battery with a capacity of 42 kWh, of which 37.3 kWh can be used net. This is decent and, depending on the version, should enable a range of between 298 and 320 kilometres according to the realistic WLTP cycle. For a car of this size, this is an announcement. In reality, it's not quite as many kilometers, but 280 km are easily possible, which is still a strong performance.

Made with love

The interior is also a strong performance. Modern, chic and yet playful. For example, the button that can be used to open the doors electrically at the touch of a button is already hidden in the outer door handle recess. Inside, too, there is a button instead of a mechanical handle, and next door in the door panel, the silhouette is stamped with the original Fiat 500 and the words "Made in Torino". When the electric motor is started, a welcome melody sounds. Small gimmicks that show: The Fiat 500e is made with a lot of love.

Hochwertig und modern

Das moderne Cockpit und die Materialien wirken hochwertig. Über dem Armaturenbrett thront der je nach Ausstattungsvariante bis zu 10,25 Zoll grosse Touchscreen samt U-Connect Bediensystem. Angenehm ist, dass nicht alles über das Display gesteuert wird. Wichtige Funktionen wie die Heizungseinstellungen werden noch über Knöpfe am Armaturenbrett geregelt. Etwas ungewohnt sind die Knöpfe für die Automatik, die sich ebenfalls am Armaturenbrett befinden. Angenehm sind auch die Platzverhältnisse – zumindest für Fahrer und Beifahrer. Auf der Rückbank und im Kofferraum wird es dann schon etwas enger. Der Fiat 500e ist aber ein Kleinstwagen und kein Frachtlaster.

Fellini für Fussgänger

Nachhaltigkeit demonstriert die Marke bei den Sitzbezügen, die aus Recycling-Materialien bestehen, teilweise auch aus Kunststoff, der aus dem Meer gefischt wurde. Nettes Detail: Anders als die meist sphärisch-technisch klingende Konkurrenz macht der Fiat 500e unterhalb von 20 km/h Musik! Fussgänger werden von der Titelmelodie aus Federico Fellinis Film «Amarcord» vor dem Stromer gewarnt – und das ist kein Witz! Der Fiat 500e gibt es auch als Cabrio – das einzige in diesem Segment der rein elektrischen Kleinwagen. Das Dach lässt sich per Knopfdruck einfach öffnen und schliessen. Hingucker ist dabei ganz sicher auch das Faltdach mit Fiat-Schriftzug-Druck.

Flotte Kiste

Startknopf gedrückt und schon stromert der Kleine los – und das äusserst flott. Die Beschleunigung fühlt sich leichtfüssig und gleichmässig an und es ist eine wahre Freude, sich im Stadtgewühl an allen anderen vorbeizuschlängeln. Kein Wunder bei einer Beschleunigung von 0 auf 50 km/h in 3,1 Sekunden, 100 km/h werden nach 9,0 Sekunden erreicht. Auch mit 150 km/h Spitze gehört der 118 PS starke Elektro-500 nicht zu den langsamen Fahrzeugen. Das Stadtgetümmel ist das Revier des elektrischen 500er, hier fühlt er sich wohl und wuselt lautlos durch die Gassen. Apropos lautlos: Wer sich noch an den ratternden 2-Zylinder-TwinAir-Motor des Vorgängers erinnert, freut sich beim Stromer über die angenehme Stille. In der Stadt spielt der Fiat 500e auch seine Reichweiten aus. 280 bis 300 Kilometer sind in der City kein Problem, geht es aber auf die Autobahn oder Überland, schmilzt die Ladung wie ein Eis in der Sonne.

Schnellladefunktion serienmässig

Serienmässig wird der Fiat 500e mit Schnellladefunktion via CCS-Stecker ausgeliefert, was bei der Konkurrenz meist einen Aufpreis kostet. Damit soll der Akku mit bis zu 50 bzw. 85 kW aufgeladen werden können und sich an Schnellladesäulen unter idealen Bedingungen in 35 Minuten auf 80 Prozent füllen lassen. An gewöhnlichen Wechselstromsäulen nimmt sich der Fiat bis zu 11 kW – auch das ist besser als bei der Konkurrenz. Hier dauert eine Vollladung vier Stunden und 15 Minuten. An der heimischen Steckdose dauert es gut 15 Stunden.

Ein Sherpa für alle Fälle

In Sachen Rekuperation könnte der Fiat 500e noch eine Schippe drauflegen. Zwar hat er drei Fahrstufen: Normal, Range und Sherpa. Bei Range rekuperiert der Antrieb mehr Energie als bei Normal, indem er stärker abbremst, sobald der Fahrer vom Gas geht. Doch ganz so überzeugt die Rekuperation noch nicht. Die Fahrstufe Sherpa ist das Mittel der Wahl, wenn das maximale Stromsparen im Zentrum steht und es dabei nur noch ums Ankommen geht. Dann schleicht der 500e mit maximal 80 km/h zum Ziel, Klimaanlage und Sitzheizung werden deaktiviert.

Warnen, erkennen und schützen

Fiat is also proud of the large number of assistance systems such as drowsiness warning and speed limit recognition, as well as connectivity: the charge status can be queried via smartphone and a destination can be sent to the navigation system. The small Fiat can also serve as an Internet hotspot for up to eight devices. And if the vehicle is stolen, the owner is immediately informed via smartphone.
